Well the first day of February couldn't be more different to the last one of January. There were bright blue skies this morning instead of that dreadful grey. That was the only improvement though. It is very cold. We have not got above freezing all day. Another day for hibernation. I haven't left the house all week.
It is so hard to get my head around the fact that a twelfth of this year has already passed. February already! At least that means there are only a few more weeks of winter and spring should be on it's way.
Twenty four years ago I was quite poorly and in hospital awaiting the birth of our youngest son. It was a rough time and I spent the last few weeks in and out. I was lucky to have my parents around to help out with the other 4.
I have taken to putting the TV on while I have my breakfast and it gets left on for a while so as I am cleaning the kitchen I have seen this programme about people emigrating to Australia. It seems that the biggest stumbling block is always the emotional side of leaving everyone behind. I don't think I could ever do that. I miss my little grandsons and I am only 35 minutes drive up the road! It is far enough that I don't see them anywhere near as much as I did. Hope none of my children ever decide to emigrate to the other side of the world.
I have been busy with painting and sewing today. The chimney breast has now had 2 coats on the sides and 1 on the front and I have used the 4 sample tins that Simon got yesterday. I think we need another 2! Hopefully he will bring them in this evening. He is running late though. He just phoned to say that he was only just leaving Bretton (where we lived before). He had to go and pick up his prescription from the doctors and apparently some old man collapsed in the waiting room so of course that caused a delay. Hope the man is OK. Note to self......change to new doctors surgery! Not because of old men causing delays but because we really should have changed 6 weeks ago.
Once I had done the painting and a bit of housework I got down to some sewing. I have made a birthday present for someone. Don't worry Josh it isn't for you! Note to self....make birthday card for Josh tomorrow. I'll show you what I made on Mondays show and tell....... I mean make do and mend!
I have cut out the background for my autumn quilted square. I have begun on cutting out leaves for the tree in shades of red, yellow, orange and brown. The thing is I am having trouble with the shape. They don't really look like leaves, more like blobs. I also spent quite a while cutting some scrap fabric into 5 inch squares. It takes ages. I think I might make a scrappy quilt of lots of mixed squares. We have the new furniture coming soon and will need to have lots of covers and throws for it to protect it from Alf and Loulou.
I know, I know, loads of you will be shaking your heads at the very idea of large spotty dogs being allowed to get on new furniture but we love our doggies! They are old now and it would be incredibly hard to teach them not to do it. Plus, both of us like to have a dog next to us to stroke whilst we read or watch TV. It is incredibly soothing and a great stress reliever. Well, until you want to use a computer or sew then they can actually be a bit of a pain!
Coralie has just had new furniture and she has this photo on her Facecbook page. I never thought I would see the day. They swore that he wasn't ever going to be allowed on the furniture! That lasted about 2 days!
Just had another phone call from Simon to say he will be even later as he is stuck in a village called Kate’s Bridge where there is either road works or an accident. That is about 15 minutes from here once he clears the hold up. Good job that dinner is a fish pie so won't come to any harm in the oven. Can't say the same for the veggies which are already boiling away to mush on the hob.
He is lucky he is getting any dinner tonight. I am sitting here typing this with wads of blood soaked kitchen roll wrapped around my thumb. I cut a chunk out whilst chopping up a swede. (Vegetable not inhabitant of Sweden). Personally I blame Verity and Steve who gave us a new set of extra sharp knives for Christmas. My old blunt ones didn't cut flesh. Well not human flesh. I don't think it is too bad just bleeding lots. At least I didn't slice the top of like Verity did a few years ago.
OK, time to go and warm some plates and see if I can drain the vegetables without getting blood all over them. I was going to wait for Simon to do it but they will have disintegrated into a soggy mess by the time he gets here.
