Sunday already and another week has bitten the dust. So it must be time for a quick catch up again. Thursday we baby sat for Evan and Flynn. We had a lovely time and they were very good. Bath time and story time were fun. This is a photo of me with Evan. Oh and one of me and Barclay too.
On Friday I went on the bus to Coralies house and that went OK. The bus was on time despite the snow and when I got to Peterborough I only waited a few minutes for the Bretton bus. Just as well as it was freezing and the bus station has been closed for a revamp so the buses are going into an open air car park across the road and there is no shelter.
Denise was already at Coralie's house when I got there and Flynn was at home too as he wasn't well. He is full up with some sort of cold virus. We didn't really do any sewing as I didn't have my machine with me. I did finish off the pleats that we had been trying out last time. Denise is teaching us a new technique to practice each time we see her, that way hopefully if we want to do something in the future we will know how to do it.
Both Coralie and I were showing off the seasons panels that we have been doing. Denise also refreshed my memory with the crochet and attempted to teach me a new stitch. We also discussed how to measure for curtains and how to make them. I am currently getting some fabric samples ready for when the furniture comes and I can get on with making them.
We had a nice lunch and then I went out to collect Evan from preschool. He is so adorable. He was so excited that it was me collecting him as he didn't know that would happen. I asked him if he wanted to go to the shops and get sweets and a magazine, which he did. I said shall we go to Sainsbury's or the sweet shop and he said “Let's go to the sweet shop because it isn't as far as Sainsbury's and I do get terribly tired when I have been to preschool”! He is 3 and a half!
Simon picked me up from Coralie's after school and we drove home. We had a nice evening with a Chinese takeaway and a bottle of wine. Friday seems to have become takeaway night since we moved here.
On Saturday we woke to more snow. We weren't too worried as the plan was to get on and finally finish painting the living room which we did, We are quite pleased with it. We have rehung all our photos so it feels like home again. I do love all our pictures. The carpet is being fitted on Thursday and the new sofa's should only be a few more weeks. All that needs to be done now is to replace the white wood above the brick fireplace with natural wood. Simon will do that at half term which is just a week away. I think he has decided on sweet chestnut which is quite light.
Today we were supposed to have had my sister and Dad here but the snow has prevented it. We had a lot more snow yesterday. It started at about 4pm and was still going at 1m and at 4am when I got up to go to the loo. The weather forecast is saying we could get another inch this evening. We have had about 6 inches, or at least it is laying 6 deep, more may have fallen. In places it has drifted and is over a foot and a half deep! I have not seen snow like this since I was a child. We never had snow like this in Bretton. It is cold, VERY COLD. I hate cold and I hate snow, roll on spring. I don't think this is predicted to last very long. Should be gone by midweek.
These were about 7pm yesterday evening.
So today has ended up being a lazy one. Simon has varnished the shoe rack that he made and will put another coat on after dinner. He is now doing some marking for school. I have done some sewing and watched last Sundays episode of “Call the midwife”. That is a really good programme, the BBC has excelled itself. I find it interesting too as it was filmed in the area of the East End that my relatives came from. I shall watch episode 4 tonight.
I am now having some computer time. Reading blogs, entering competitions, playing Farm Town and doing a bit of research into sundials...............all at the dame time as typing this blog! I am the master of multi-tasking! We have a lamb stew simmering away for dinner, I have a glass of the red stuff in my hand and Simon is just going to light the fire. A blissful way to spend a Sunday although I would have preferred to have seen my sister and Dad. They are hoping to come next Sunday weather permitting.
Oh, just remembered.............those of you that told us to try coal on the fire were right. Simon got a small bag on Saturday so we could try it. It does make it a lot hotter and it burns for longer without having to keep adding more and more logs. So, we now need to buy a coal bucket, not to mention that before next winter comes we will need somewhere to store coal! This fire has cost a small fortune but it is worth it.
Simon has found a lady who specialises in canal ware and she has hand painted coal buckets. They are really nice but the flowers are in the traditional red, and yellows. He contacted her to see if she could do one with teal and duck egg flowers and she has replied to say that she will give it a go and send us a photo. If we like it we can buy but if we don't that is fine. I am sure we will like it and it will look lovely.
Isn't it funny how when I was a very young child open coal fires were common place and then everyone went crazy for gas and electric fires which of course were replaced soon after with the advent of central heating. Now, more and more people are opting for some kind of open fire or log burning stove. It does make the room feel very cosy and gives a wonderful atmosphere that can never be created with a gas fire however convenient and clean they may be.
Going to check on my stew.
