Christmas catch up blog

A quick catch up on our Christmas.  We had an enjoyable Christmas Eve with Verity, Steve, Saskia and Josh.  Mainly relaxing and watching TV.  On the big day Simon got up at 8am and got the turkey in the oven.  The rest of us were up about 9am and we all had a leisurely breakfast together.  Then we took turns in the bathroom getting ready for the day.  By about half past ten we were all in the living room and the present giving began.
I got some lovely presents including my Kindle Ereader, my favourite Flower perfume, and a new snowflake charm for my Pandora bracelet.  We didn’t open many as we were waiting for Sam and Lisa to arrive. I think it was about 10.45 when they did and that is where the day went off course.
I can’t remember who opened the door to them I only remember that one look at their faces told me something terrible had happened. Just 5 minutes before they got to us they had a phone call from Lisa’s sister to say that her Mum and Dad had been in a head on collision on their way to Boston to their grandparents.  It was bad.
Lisa’s 2 sisters were travelling in separate cars behind them.  Sarah was just 2 cars behind and saw it happen but Emma was about a half mile back so came along a few minutes later. Initially it seemed that they thought they hadn’t survived.  To cut a long story short I will tell you now that they are both ok.  They have various relatively minor injuries and Jackie, Lisa’s Mum, is suffering memory loss which they are concerned about but they will be fine.  I still cannot believe that they have got away so lightly.  Someone must have been looking out for them.
It was a horrendous day.  Lisa was distraught as you can imagine and we were trying to shield Ellie from it as much as possible.  We had made arrangements to get some baby milk and bottles from a friend of Coralie so that Sam and Lisa could go to the hospital but in the end they didn’t as it took a very long time before they were even cut out of the car and the roads were just so bad.   They needed special equipment to cut them free and it took over 2 and a half hours to get them out.
Obviously Lisa was on the phone to her sisters constantly so we knew what was going on for a lot of the time but it was very hard for her not being there.  When we got the call to say that they were alive and her Dad was conscious it was such a relief but then of course in the back of your head all the time you are still wondering what state they are in. The relief when we knew they were out and on their way to the hospital was huge although we still had no idea what to expect.  Lisa was finally able to speak to her Mum around tea time.  Once she knew they were going to be ok she felt a little bit better.
We were going to Coralie’s house for a buffet and Sam and Lisa did come for a little while but they just wanted to get home so they didn’t stay for the snowman presents.  It was such a shame but we were all just so pleased to know that her Mum and Dad were safe.  It certainly brings home to you how fragile life is and how everything can change in a second.
We did have a good time at Coralie’s and when we got back home we watched some TV.  I think we all felt a bit drained and tired, not up to much.
Boxing Day was a lovely relaxing day. Sam and Lisa came over to us in the afternoon and we finally opened the Christmas presents.  Coralie, John and the boys came just before tea and we had a lovely time watching all the grandchildren playing. Once they had all gone home the rest of us played a board game and watched TV.
Everyone has gone home now except Josh who is here for the Uni holidays and doesn’t go back until about the 4th of January.  Verity and Steve went yesterday and Saskia has gone today.  Actually Saskia has gone today with Simon to visit the dreaded outlaws.  That’s a whole other story! He will be dropping her at the station on the way home.
So another Christmas done and dusted.  We are beginning to feel like Christmas doesn’t like us very much.  You will recall that last Christmas my 5 week old grandson Flynn was very ill in hospital and it was touch and go.  Perhaps we shouldn’t bother next year?
Today I have been having a quiet day catching up on everyone’s blog and leaving some comments here and there. The original plan was that we were all going to Stevenage, I would pop into the hospital with my Dad and Simon would visit his parents.  That all changed when it became obvious that Simon was going all day.  As usual I think it was all arranged behind my back.  He knew I wouldn’t want to go all day as it is just too much for me.  A few hours are the most that I can bear.
So he has gone off with Saskia and Evan and will be back about 6pm. That bloody family always get what they want.  No doubt she who must be obeyed probably spoke and that was it. The pretence at being a big close family gets so much up my nose.  If they really were then they would speak to each other and see each other regularly not just once a year.  They never phone each other.  Simon did not send a single card to any of them.....
Oh goodness, got myself started!  Shouldn’t have even gone down that road! At least I am not a part of it.  If you married someone and you get along with their family and their family like you then please consider yourself very fortunate.
Ok, I’m off now; there is lots of stuff to get done around here.
