Entry for 04 May 2008

Sunday evening already!  That's 2 days of our bank holiday weekend gone!  We have been very busy. Yesterday Saskia came over and we went to B&Q and got some wood stain to do the fence and all the decking.  We got red cedar as my Dad has just had his done in that colour and it looks great.
The three of us then went over to Sam's house in Bourne.  He is busy decorating and as Lisa was working he wanted us to help out with Ellie so that he could get on.  We took her in the pushchair to the local park which has a river and swings and ducks and just about everything you could need.
We got some pasties and cakes in the bakery for our lunch. Ellie was so good.  Unfortunately the ducks had obviously been well fed because they weren't at all interested in our bread. Ellie loves the ducks.
We let her get out of the pushchair to walk which she also loves.  She is very good at walking now and loves to toddle around.  We sat and ate our lunch which Ellie shared.  She toddled all round on the grass clutching a bit of pasty!
She had great fun with Grandad and Auntie Saskia.  She doesn't want to be picked up. We put her on the swing which she liked but she soon wanted to get out!  The slide was quite a hit, but poor Nanny was exhausted!!  Ellie fell asleep in  her pushchair on the way back which was good for Sam as it meant he could still carry on decorating after we left. He is doing the stairs now.

Saskia and I then went to the shops in Hampton, while Simon started on the wood stain. I managed to get a little lace cardigan to go with my dress for the wedding. I have a cream silk jacket for during the day but I wanted something for the evening. Only 5 days to go now!
Today was also busy. As soon as Simon got back from walking the dogs we went to Toys R Us and got Ellies birthday present....... a Wendy house for the garden. She is a bit little yet, but it will last for years. We went on from there to Pet City to stock up on dog chews and biscuits. It was then home for a quick lunch and a bit more fence painting for Simon.
After lunch we went to the garden centre and spent a fair amount of cash on lots of bedding plants!  We want to get all our pots and hanging baskets done.  It looked so nice last year and we are determined to get it looking good again this year.  We must do something about the grass which is a real mess.
I also got lots of bird seed, peanuts and fat balls for my birds. My friend Connie's husband JT has told me how to stop the squirrels stealing all the stuff from the bird feeders. It involves stringing some cord or rope between the trees and covering it with small lengths of pipe or some kind of tube. You hang the feeders from it and the idea is that when the squirrels try and go along it, the tube pieces move round and the squirrels fall off!  I can't wait to see if it works.
We did it this afternoon and we used one and a half inch lengths of bamboo to thread the cord through. It looks quite good.  I will report in the next couple of days if it works.  When we were at the garden centre, I saw a bird feeder that you can attach to windows. It seemed like a good idea as the squirrels can't go up glass.........as far as I know!  But then I wondered, if I put it on our big glass patio doors if the birds would end up flying into the glass and braining themselves??  I might buy one to try.   Not because I want to see if the birds fly into the glass; but to see if it is any good!
I do enjoy seeing the birds and we have a big variety considering how small our garden is. I suppose it's because we back onto the park. We had a baby wood pecker today!
The rest of the day was spent with Simon continuing to paint the wood stain on the fence and me planting up pots. Sam called in for about an hour with Ellie and I stopped to play with her. The weather was nice and mild so we put her highchair in the garden and she had her lunch outside. She loved being able to walk around in the garden. It's the first time she has been able to do that. Had to keep her away from Grandads paint though!  Also had to keep Alfie and Loulou indoors as I don't trust them with her yet.
Tomorrow, hopefully the weather will still be good and we can get on and finish the wood stain. The decking all needs to be pressure washed first though. It's beginning to look good. There are more photos of Ellie in my May album and also a video.
