Entry for 07 April 2008

Busy, busy, busy as usual!! Yesterday I did my normal jobs in the morning. I am doing some washing and ironing for a friend so I have pile of that which has carried over to today. Yesterday afternoon I took Coralie to the florist who is doing the flowers for her wedding. With only 4 weeks to go she needed to finalise all the arrangements. We were there ages!
By the time Coralie and I got back home, Verity had finally arrived and Josh had collected her from the station. Sam, Lisa and Ellie had arrived too and dinner was nearly ready, so we timed it just right. We had everyone there for dinner except Saskia who had to work. It was really nice.
While Coralie and I were out, Simon with a bit of help from a couple of the children, had chopped down the large tree at the bottom of the garden. I know it seems terrible to take down a tree but we did it for several reasons. Over the years it had become absolutely huge and the roots on big trees like than can cause subsidence. It was quite near the house as we only have a little garden.
The second reason was that it blocked the sun for about 4 hours a day, which wasn't good for the plants or me! Thirdly, we are having a lot of problems with squirrels, (you may remember we had then in our loft a while back) and I think that tree was a big attraction for them. We do still have a couple of trees left so I suppose the squirrels will still come.
All that needs to be done now is to get it all chopped up and taken to the dump. They have garden waste, disposal facilities there. I am glad Simon did it while I was out as the pessimist in me had visions of it going the wrong way and taking the fence and shed with it!!
You can see it laying just outside the gate. It's in 2 pieces!
We are hopefully going to get some astro turf for the tiny area of remaining lawn. Last year we spent a lot of money on grass seed, 2 separate lots of laying turf and also more money spent on "Dog Rocks" to supposedly neutralise the dogs pee! None of it did any good. The turf was ruined each time within about a week! I guess that's what happens when you have 3 dogs!!
We have been looking into astro turf which is quite expensive, even for the small quantity that we need. It is supposed to be very good for dogs though as they (supposedly) can't ruin it. You simply scoop up mess in the normal way and then hose it down. Once we get it done I'll let you know if it works.
Yesterday evening when everyone had gone home (except Verity) I went out for a drink with my friend Ed. He has just returned from over a month in Thailand. We had a nice evening and Thailand sounds lovely. Ed goes regularly and this was his 13th visit!
Today Simon has gone to visit his parents and all 3 girls have gone with him. I have had a good day getting on with all the washing and ironing and tidying up after yesterday. There were still toys everywhere this morning! You forget how much mess follows a baby around!
Verity is at home all week as it is still her Easter holiday at Uni. Her boyfriend Adam is coming down on Friday for the weekend and they will return to Southampton together. Adam is on a different course to Verity so he is not on holiday. It's Veritys birthday on the 14th so I expect we will have another big family dinner next Sunday before she goes home.
Right that's it for now. I want to look on eBay and see if I can get a travel cot to keep here for Ellie; plus I need to look at Argos on-line and order myself a new ironing board as my one has just about had it! I know the picture below is an autumn one but it's the only one that I have with squirrels!!
