Entry for 10 July 2008

The week is flying by as usual. Yesterday I went with Coralie and baby Evan up to Stevenage to visit my Mum and Dad. The journey, both ways, was dreadful as it was just pouring with rain. You would never believe that we are nearly half way through July. I have read that the whole summer is going to be very wet.
We got to my Dads about 10.30 am. Evan had been crying for the last 15 minutes of the journey, but was fine once he was fed. We had coffee and biscuits and sat chatting with my Dad. He had some cuddle time with Evan.
After lunch we went to the hospital to see Mum. At first she didn't even acknowledge Evan. It took a long while of coaxing before she took a look. To be honest she wasn't really that interested and it was a real effort to get her to have him on her lap so we could get some photos. We didn't manage to get any of the 4 generations, IE, Mum, Me, Coralie and Evan. She did comment at one point that "she is very gorgeous!".

Coralie Evan and Great Nanny Iris!
Me with Mum and Dad and baby Evan.
It was nice to have the opportunity for Evan to meet his Great Grandmother, but it was quite upsetting too. These occasions are always difficult because they remind us, not only what she has lost, but what we have too.
3 generations! If I was in there it would be 4!
Dad went home on his "Dial a Ride" bus and Coralie and I left shortly after to drive back up the A1 in the torrential rain. Coralie came home to our house for a little while so Grandad and Uncle Josh were able to see Evan. Josh took her home. It was her first night on her own as John is away until Sunday with his work. I haven't heard from Coralie this morning so I hope it went OK. I haven't dared to phone in case they are asleep.
Simon was doing the last of his marking last night and I think he should be finished totally tonight. I went to see my friend Ed and had a Chinese take away which was very nice.
Today, I have been catching up on all my chores. I have done some cleaning and washing and hoovering. I still have more hoovering, ironing and some bank stuff to sort out. I also need to phone the insurance people for claim forms for Alfie and Loulous vet bills. We can finally claim now the treatment is finished.
I walked up to the shops just now as I had a couple of things to post for Saskia and I also wanted to go to the library. The last few days I have been reading an old family history book as I had no magazines and no books to read! I got 10 books at the library, one of which is "Honeymoon" by James Patterson. I haven't read any of his before but my friend Fuzzy did a book review on her site and it sounded good, so I thought I would give him a try.
While I have been having my coffee I started the first book which is called "Lottery" by Patricia Wood. I think it is quite light hearted. It is about a man who is a bit simple, but not actually retarded, as he says himself, because his IQ is 76! He wins 12 million dollars on a state lottery and suddenly finds that his whole life changes and he has lots of "family". I think I will enjoy it.
This afternoon I am going to use my "half hour" system to ensure that I get the rest of my jobs done and also get plenty of time for me. I want to do some more of my family history stuff. I need to check a reference that I found the other day. I have received an email from the GRO to say they have checked and the person isn't listed at the reference given! I mus have copied it down wrong as I know I found her!
Simon said he will be in about 5pm. I need to get dinner early as he is going to Kettering with Sam tonight to pick up a car that Sam has bought on eBay. I don't know if it's a car for his own use or one for breaking. Sam has a good side line going in breaking cars for spares. He buys them either at auction or on eBay and then breaks them up for spare parts which he sells on eBay. I am amazed at what people will buy. He does quite well at this.
Dinner is going to be a quick easy affair of a ready made steak and kidney pie with veggies. With Simon out it will be a nice quiet evening. I shall watch Eastenders and then get on with some more research. I might make some more bread too. The bread that I made on Tuesday turned out really well.
I wouldn't have purchased a bread maker but I won this one in a competition. The first few goes I used my own ingredients and they turned out OK. Then I got some ready made mixes of different kinds of bread, soya and linseed, wholemeal, granary etc. The first time I used one, I tipped it all in along with the whole sachet of yeast. My bread maker is a 2lb loaf size, which is what the mixes were. However, something wasn't quite right as the mix rose so much that it burst out of the lid! I had to try and scoop out some of the mixture and it was a bit of a disaster.

The bread maker that I won. See how it was coming out over the top again!
This time I decided to follow the instructions for a one and a half pound loaf, but still keep my machine set to 2lbs. This meant taking out 100g of the mixture and measuring one and a quarter teaspoons from the packet of yeast. This seemed to work. It rose really well and at one point It was touching the lid and I thought it was going to do the same thing and just keep on rising. I opened the lid for a couple of minutes and that seemed to help. Anyway, this time I actually got a really nice loaf! I do think it's quite a lot of messing around though!
Some of my bread. Most of it was eaten by Simon and Josh while it was still warm!
Right time to go and get on with some jobs. I will be back later and will put the photos of my Mum and baby Evan in an album. (Multiply only). I may have a go at Picture Perfect this week too.
