I did go for a short while on Saturday and I managed to get quite a few. Unfortunately, I have never been much of a "shopper" and I hate it if I don't know what I want. So Christmas shopping is a bit of a chore for me. Still I suppose I should be thankful that I don't have to buy as much as I used to.
That brings me to another issue. My children have always had several "main" presents and a stocking. When they were little the stockings were packed full of small cheap things which the children were often more thrilled with than the main presents. Stuff like colouring books, pencils, bubble baths etc. As the years have gone by and the children grown older the cost of the stockings has grown along side. The contents are no longer colouring books and stuff but CD's and DVD's and fancy underware and novels and jewelery and on and on.
All very expensive stuff. We reached a point some years back when the stockings cost considerably more than the main presents. So a few years back we decided that stockings should be consigned to the past. This caused a full blown riot in the "rank and file"! So we eventually decided after much debate between Simon and I and much "chuntering" by the children that we would continue the tradition for those children who would be at home until Joshua was 18. That seemed to be fair and shut Joshua up! (He had been moaning that he would get less years worth than the others!!)
So, Joshua was 18 last February and in theory this should be our first stocking free year. BUT...........................I have just realised something. I am as guilty as the children. I don't want it to stop. Christmas will not be the same without stockings! So I have made an "executive" decision (don't tell Simon).
We will have small stockings this year filled with small stuff so they don't cost too much. Next year we may have to change the rules because we will have a grand child by then and that will make Christmas once again that magical time so loved by little ones. I can't wait in the coming years to see the face of my grand child when he (or she) sees Father Christamas for the first time.
So, Stockings it is for this year. As an after thought, a new tradition for the future could be that all children have to do a stocking for their Mum and Dad. That sounds good to me after all these years of shopping for stocking presents.
Sam, Coralie, Verity, Saskia and Josh.....................did you read that last bit? I think it may be your turn now.
