Well the final day of June 2007 has been yet another very rainy one here in my little corner of England. It hasn't been quite as bad as they predicted but it has rained steadily nearly all day with only short breaks.
Still, I am having a pleasant weekend so far. Yesterday evening we went out for a meal at a pub called the Dog and Duck. It was quite nice although the service was a little lax. Getting served at the bar and ordering food took forever but we concluded in the end that the only man serving was possibly new.
The table we sat at was quite dirty with lots of sticky marks and screwed up tissues. I think something had been spilt. When the waitress came to lay the table for us, she was just going to go ahead and we had to actually stop her and ask her to clean it for us first! A bit bad. Fortunately when the meal arrived (25 mins later, although we didn't really notice that as we were talking school stuff). It was very good.
Simon had venison and I had a fish pie made with haddock, salmon, prawns and leeks with cheesy mash topping. It was very tasty and very filling. We decided against desserts. We went over to Sam and Lisa's afterwards just for half an hour as we hadn't seen Ellie since fathers day. Unfortunately she was tired and hungry so not very happy. Bless her. She weighs 11lb now so she is doing really well. She has also started to "talk" back to you with little oohs and ahhs!
I didn't sleep very well last night at all and sat up reading for hours, so this morning I had a bit of a lay in while Simon walked the dogs. Once he came back and we had coffee we went to a local garden centre. We spent a good while walking round in the rain. They have some lovely stuff there. We finally got our Acer tree for the barrel that we bought a week or so ago.
It is an Acer Palmatum Atropurpureum! Just thought I'd say that for all you gardeners out there! It doesn't mean anything to me. An Acer is a Japanese Maple tree and this one is a sort of green and red colour but should eventually be a deep red in autumn. Very pretty. We planted it into it's barrel this evening, in the rain! It's in the corner of the new patio by the shed.
This afternoon, Simon was in school for a reunion of all old teaching staff and I went into town with Saskia. We went to the phone shop first to try and sort out her mobile. It has just been returned to her after a 2 month wait and it still doesn't work. It's a whole long saga, but to cut it short it has been sent for repair for the third time!
After that I got a retractable washing line in Argos as part of the garden renovations has meant the removal of my old washing line. This one should be quite good as you only pull it out when required and as I don't often use it that will be better than a permanent one. After that we had a bit of a wander round the shops. There was a new novelty type shop where we both got a mood ring! Remember those from the 70's? They cost the grand price of £1.99 so will obviously be turning our fingers green within a week. They are pretty though. Mine keeps going bright blue and the leaflet says that means I'm feeling passionate! Simon keeps checking to see if it's still the same. LOL.

Simon's Paella
Once we got back from town, I had a rest with a cup of coffee while Simon cooked dinner. A very delicious paella. Made with Chicken breasts, chorizo sausage, prawns, rice, red onion and peppers. Yummy. We are having a toffee apple crumble pie with vanilla custard for dessert, but a bit later as the paella was filling. Once I have finished on here, I am going to do some embroidery while Simon watches a film.
So as you can see, so far, we are having a lovely weekend despite the grotty weather. It is supposed to be raining again tomorrow. Simon was supposed to be going to a car show but isn't going to bother now. I am hoping that if the rain eases a bit that we can go to another garden centre and get more bedding plants and hanging baskets so we can finally get the garden completed. There is still one more slab for Simon to cut and lay too.
Rain, rain go away, come again another day!
