In an effort to find something more interesting than housework to blog about I have taken a look at the BBC news website. Guess what is the main thing on there? SNOW! Well we still have way too much of that for my liking here in Peterborough. Remind me please, to never again say we don’t get snow. We do! About once every 20 years so I suppose I shouldn’t moan.
We haven’t had any further snow falls today but the snow is still lying quite thick on the ground. According to the BBC we may have more to come. “Britain's coldest snap for 20 years shows no sign of letting up, as temperatures threaten to plummet across the UK overnight. Almost anywhere in the UK can expect a further covering of snow on Sunday and Monday, the BBC Weather Centre said. Temperatures are expected to drop to as low as -10C (14F) in some rural areas, while towns are likely to see the mercury drop to as low as -4C (25F).”
Part of the story also mentions how councils are all running out of salt to treat the roads. I know we have had more snow than normal in some areas (Peterborough for one) but the majority of the country has actually only seen a marginal increase on the normal. So why are we running out of salt?
That seems to be our major problem in this country; we are always taken by surprise. It does actually snow here quite a lot every single winter, but in good old Brit style every year we say “Ohhhh snow” and the whole country grinds to a halt.
My brother-in-law lives in Canada where they get not 6-8 inches of snow, but 6-8 feet, or more of snow and everything there runs as normal for the whole 4 months that the snow often lasts. They know it is going to happen, they expect it to happen and they are geared up and ready for it when it does. Come on everyone what has happened to the good old British bulldog spirit? It’s just snow.
I was very amused to read in the same article that Gloucestershire county council has said it will be resorting to using table salt to treat its roads! The mind boggles! If they can’t get enough road salt, where do they propose to get all that table salt from? How much would it take?
I suggest if you are running low on table salt you nip out to Tesco now before it has all been bought up! Of course there will then be a shortage and the price will rise dramatically. I can’t remove the image I have in my head of council workers in their fluorescent yellow jackets walking up the motor way with a little pot of salt, sprinkling away as they go!
I just read a bit more of this article and it seems we don’t have to panic about salt shortages after all. “Gloucestershire County Council has ordered 500 tonnes of white table salt from a company in Cheshire.” So they won’t be buying it at Tesco.
I of course will be hibernating at home next week if we get more, just as I did this week. I’m not daft! Mr Tesco will deliver my shopping (hopefully) and I can stay tucked up nice and warm here.
On a more serious note, I hope none of you get too much more and I hope that you are all able to cope with what you do get. Remember what they tell us; do not drive unless it is really essential. If you have to go out, then walk, but be careful!
Also don’t forget the essentials, thermal underwear, gloves, scarf, woolly socks, boots and most important of all, a hat. Simon and I were amazed today to see a man playing with his children at the back of our house. The children had on coats and gloves but no hats but the man was wearing jeans and a short sleeved T shirt! Crazy!
I just read that last paragraph again.... you may also like to add a warm coat over your thermals!!!! LOL. Have fun in the snow.
