Ribena (copy)

Ooops, I've done it again! I have caused confusion amongst my over seas friends with my mention of Ribena. Ribena is in fact a brand of uncarbonated soft drink made by Glaxo Smith Kline. The original Ribena is made from 100% blackcurrant juice. There are now several other varieties too. It contains high levels of vitamin C.
The name Ribena, comes from the botanical name for the blackcurrant, Ribes nigrum.
Ribena is now sold as a cordial and also pre-diluted and marketed in a large variety of flavours.. The original Blackcurrant flavour comes in Original and Really Light (low calorie) varieties. Ribena can be mixed with the alcoholic, anise flavoured drink, Pernod. Water & ice are then added to produce the cocktail named the 'King of Denmark'. It is also a key ingredient in the "snakebite and black" version of the lager/cider mixture called snakebite
It makes a very good long drink for quenching your thirst on hot days. It is also good served hot and my Mum used to give it to us hot when we were small and had colds in the winter. It has a high sugar content though, so you need to watch out for you teeth! They do actually produce a lower sugar variety called "Tooth kind" which is endorsed by the British Dental Association, but it doesn't taste the same!!
