Sunday 18th January

I AM COLD!!!!!   We have just got back from the second session on the allotment.  We are really pleased with our efforts too.   To fill you in on our day, Simon went to the barn this morning after walking the dogs and got a tarpaulin.  He did a bit of work there too.  Sam went with him so I got to play with Ellie for a while as she stayed here with me.  She entertained Saskia and me as always.  She is so funny.
Once Simon got back we had lunch and had the foresight to prepare our roast and get it in the oven before we left.  I am so glad about that now as we have got the veg on and dinner will be ready in about 20 minutes.  I think we need that.  We did think to take flasks of coffee and a packet of biscuits to the allotment with us though so we had something warm.

We actually got a lot more done than we thought we would. Simon cleared a lot of weeds and we got the tarpaulin down.  That will stay in place until the middle of April.  Coralie and Saskia and myself took it in turns initially to clear weeds and fill up black bags (23 in total) which we put in the “shed” ready to be taken to the dump next week.  We then started on re-digging the first bed and doing a bit of trench composting.  This is when you dig a channel; half fill it with compost and then refill it.

Once we pulled the grass away that was growing on the compost heap and prodded it about a bit we found so great compost under there.  Simon and Saskia took over after a while with Simon digging and Saskia filling it with compost.

This is the old compost heap.
Coralie and I did a whole lot more weeding.  We are quite pleased with the amount we managed to rake up.  That long grass is disappearing pretty quickly.  Evan sat in his pram supervising.  Coralies husband John came half way through the afternoon but disappeared quite rapidly with Evan.  I think next time Evan needs to go for a walk it should be Nanny’s job! LOL.

See, I did do some work!

Simon also managed to join the 3 pallet boards together to make a new place for our compost heap.  We moved a little bit of the compost.  Coralie also laid some old cardboard down next to the tarpaulin after searching out some old bricks to hold it down.  Simon got the bricks for the tarpaulin from the barn.
All in all we think we did really well and we had fun!  It was very amusing watching Saskia who was totally oblivious to us, doing the “Tiger Club” Dance with all the actions for Evans amusement.  I’m not sure he was amused but we were!

Time to go home it's getting dark.

Coralie and I are hoping to get there on Tuesday morning weather permitting to rake over that first bed and maybe clear some more weeds.  Then that will be it until next weekend, when we will hopefully get there again.

These are my new funky wellies that have rubbed all the backs of my legs!
PS  It is now nearly 10.00pm, we have had dinner, I have watched “dancing on ice on the TV and had a hot bath...........and I can hardly walk!!!!  I am going to have to bandage up my right wrist which is dreadful probably due to raking weeds.  I am stiff all over and I have big red marks right round the calves of both legs where my new wellies have rubbed.  I didn’t even realise that they were rubbing at the time.  I think I either need long socks or maybe woolly tights to wear with them.  Still never mind, I’m sure it’s all good exercise and we will learn.
