The blogging jar 1 star gazing

Well lots of you know that Chris has started a new meme type thing called “The blogging jar” which will take place each Thursday.  If you want to find out more or join in, follow the link to Chris’s blog.
This Thursday the theme is: Tell us about a Star Gazing experience you had...
Well to be honest although the stars are very pretty and all that I have never been one for star gazing.  I can remember just 2 occasions where I actually spent time really looking at them.  The first was in 1999 when Simon and I were on holiday in Massachusetts.  We were staying in a small place called Sandwich.  It is the oldest town on Cape Cod.  It is very rural and there is no light pollution so the sky was very black and we noticed that there seemed to be an awful lot of stars up there.  I guess we just don’t see them at home.  Each evening we walked into the town for a meal and each evening we enjoyed walking back watching the stars.
The only other occasion that I can remember star watching was a few years ago when my friend Eddy got a telescope.  He was very keen for a while and would set it up in his back garden.  It was late September time when we had been told that there would be a meteorite shower with lots of shooting starts.  So I went round one evening and he set up the telescope in the garden along with 2 sun loungers! We sat wrapped up in blankets drinking glasses of the red stuff and star gazing.
It was the most amazing I had ever seen.  We sat there so long that we could more or less predict where the next shooting star would begin and end. There seemed to be a pattern to them.  It was fantastic.  Simon said we were crazy when he came to pick me up as it was a very cold night.
I also recall that when Saskia first went abroad to work that I would sometimes look out of the window late at night and see the stars and wonder if she was also looking at the stars.  A romantic idea but in reality she had probably finished her show and was our partying somewhere with friends.  Star gazing would be the last thing on her mind!
I guess maybe it is something you grow into as you age like gardening!
Jilly
