Well, this book, The Secret certainly gets people going! I said that there were a lot of discussions going on at the IMDB and now there are discussions going on here too. One or two of you thought that you may have upset me with your comments. Not at all, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
I am not even sure what I make of this book myself. As I said, I think it is good in that it encourages us to be positive. I can often be a negative kind of person, so I need a reminder. I do think though that it has some fatal flaws.
In my Mums case, is she to blame because she didn't think herself better years ago when she was first diagnosed? I don't believe that it works like that with Alzheimer's. A few of you were able to tell me about first hand incidents of cancers and other illnesses being cured with positive thoughts. I know that with cancer you are actively encouraged to use visualisation and positive thinking. I also believe that this must certainly help, BUT, I don't think that it is possible to cure these illnesses using that method alone. The people that were cured possibly had some other kind of treatment going on as well?
I think with illness, positive thoughts on their own can't cure. Maybe it just wasn't your time to go? I think if it is "your time" nothing on earth is going to change that.
Some of you have said that it is hard work and dedication that gets us what we want and that encouraging people to sit around and do nothing but think is just stupid. What will happen to all these people when the method doesn't work? I agree with that too, nothing in life is free, but I don't think the book suggests that we do nothing but sit around.
I agree with what some of you have said about the author making millions of pounds from the sale of her book and that was her motivation, but then isn't that the point of writing a book? You obviously hope it is going to sell and therefore it will make you money. We don't have to buy it.
That is the other point about the book, you don't have to buy into it , just because you have read it. I like to read things that make me think. Sometimes I will take bits with me into my life, other stuff I ignore. So, I shall try to adopt the positive thinking ideas but I don't think I will be sitting around all day just imagining that all my house work is done and the dinner is ready and I am miraculously 2 stones lighter! Nice idea though.
Hey, I have just had a thought, if you sit and visualise lots of money coming your way, you know, really visualise it and believe it, then it doesn't happen. Can you sue the author for false advertising or something? Mind you, if you sued her and won, you would get lots of money in compensation, so actually it would have worked, wouldn't it?
