Thursday 22 July

Time is flying past again.  Another week is nearly gone and the school summer holidays are now upon us.  Simons last day is tomorrow.   What really worries me is that in 6 weeks time the schools all return for the winter term and summer will be over.  I am really hoping that the weather sorts itself out and gives us 6 weeks to remember.  So far it has been nothing to write home about.
The weather has not been treating out allotment kindly either.  Too much rain, too little sun, does not produce happy crops.  The ideal climate for most things would be full on hot sunshine during the day with a small down pour of rain over night.  Nothing too heavy, just enough to give them a drink. Bliss.
Sadly this growing lark seems to be fraught with problems.  If it isn’t the weather that is all wrong then you will be fighting against something else.  Mice, pigeons, squirrels, foxes, moles, numerous different kinds of aphids, the wrong kind of soil, weeds ..... And so it goes on.
We are doing ok for some things.  The onions and garlic are now all in and drying out.  They have done well.  The elephant garlic is enormous. Courgettes are growing so fast we can’t keep pace and have already started to give them away.  I have made several lots of soup to freeze and I also made a chocolate courgette cake too which turned out really well.  Like carrot cake, you can’t taste the courgettes in it. In fact Simon took most of it into school for them to try and nobody guessed the mystery ingredient.
I have been busy all week as usual.  Normal household chores and other bits and bobs.  The main thing I wanted to get done was that bunting for the wedding.  You will all know by now that I have done it.  200 metres!  That is a whole load of sewing not to mention a whole load of ironing afterwards too! I now have it boxed up and ready to go.
You will probably also recall that I was going to treat myself to a bottle of wine when I finished.  The only wine in the house is the posh stuff which has been purchased for the wedding so I borrowed a bottle of that...... The bloody stuff has corks in it and my poor little wrists can’t get corks out.  I was not best pleased.  I had earned that wine!  Also goes to show that we buy cheap wine as it comes in a screw cap bottle!
What else have I done this week?  I have made batches of pea soup as well as the courgette.  They are frozen now.  I made 3 jars of blackcurrant jam with some currants given to us by our allotment neighbour Chris.  Yesterday I made 7 jars of blackberry jam with the last of the blackberries from last year.  I wanted to use them up as it will soon be time for this year’s pickings.
Today has been a slow day.  I had a head ache all day yesterday and I woke with it again this morning.  I have pottered around taking it easy in the hope that it will go.  I have made 2 greetings cards.  1 for Coralies birthday and 1 for my niece Carly who has just got engaged.
.................................................argh...........................................just realised that it is pouring with rain.  I suddenly smelt that fresh smell you get with rain and remembered that my garlic is all outside in the garden supposedly drying out!  Had to run down there to bring it in.
I have got me some coffee now.  I am going to go through my photos to sort out some wedding ones to print off.  There is going to be a display at Verity and Steve’s wedding of everybody’s wedding photos.  Isn’t that a nice idea?  Thing is, although Saskia has been charged with organising it, I am the one printing off photos!  LOL!  Good old Mum.
Ok, enough from me now.
