Yippee, I have finished all my chores for today. Tomorrow I am going to get out the feather duster and go round the ceilings as I noticed some cob webs today. I think I will spring clean my bedroom too.
Anyway, while I was finishing off the ironing I was thinking about my cousin Wendy as it's Wednesday today and ages ago on her blog she designated Wednesdays as "Wendysdays"! In other words her day! Brilliant idea. I still think she should try telling them at work that she can't come in on "Wendysdays"!
Well I got to thinking about this and thought that I should have my own day too. Which one to choose though? There isn't a day of the week that I can conveniently transform into "Jillysday" and claim for myself. I was so desperate that I started considering the days of the week in other languages. There is Thursday in french of course; "Jeudi", doesn't really work though does it.
Anyway, while searching I found a really good website which tells the folklore associated with each day of the week and how it has developed through history to include positive and negative traits depending on the country of origin and the time of year.
WEDNESDAY is traditionally known as the fourth day of the week. This day was associated with Odin the God of War, Wisdom, Agriculture and Poetry. He was also regarded as the God of the Dead. The Anglo-Saxons changed the name from 'Odin's Day' to 'Woden's Day', whilst the French referred to the day as 'Mercredi' or 'Mercury's Day', Mercury being the God of Science, Commerce, Travellers, Rogues, and Thieves.
In most of Europe Wednesday was thought to be a very unlucky day whilst in the USA quite the opposite was believed although I am not sure why.
I did find a rhyme relating to weddings which apparently originated in New England. It may explain why so many marriages fail as most people over here get married on a Saturday!!!
'Monday for health,
Tuesday for wealth,
Wednesday the best of all.
Thursday for losses,
Friday for crosses,
And Saturday no luck at all!'
Tuesday for wealth,
Wednesday the best of all.
Thursday for losses,
Friday for crosses,
And Saturday no luck at all!'
There is also that other rhyme which most of us know, which says that Wednesday is not a good day to be born!
'Monday's child is fair of face,
Tuesday's child is full of grace,
Wednesday's child is full of woe,
Thursday's child has far to go;
Friday's child is loving and giving,
Saturday's child works hard for a living,
But the child that is born on the Sabbath-day
Is bonny and blithe, good and gay.'
Tuesday's child is full of grace,
Wednesday's child is full of woe,
Thursday's child has far to go;
Friday's child is loving and giving,
Saturday's child works hard for a living,
But the child that is born on the Sabbath-day
Is bonny and blithe, good and gay.'
Interestingly, I don't know what day of the week I was born on and I can't remember my childrens without looking them up either! I may do that later and compare us all to the rhyme.
As there doesn't seem to be a conveniently named day for me to adopt for myself, I have given up on the idea. It did however take me on to something else....... The Queen of England, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second has 2 birthdays per year. Her actual birthday on 21st of April and her Official birthday which is on the 3rd Saturday of June each year.
I don't know why she has 2 and I am now intrigued and will find out and let you all know. The point is, that if she gets 2, then why shouldn't I? I decided that there is no reason why I can't! So I thought that I would just have it 6 months after my actual birthday, which would make it the 10th of April. Then I decided that like the Queen, as it is to be my Official birthday I would have it 6 months after the actual one, but not on an exact date.
I am going to do as the Queen does and my Official birthday will be on the 3rd Saturday of April each year, rather than the tenth!! SO............ I hear-by announce that my Official birthday this year will be on ............ Saturday the 19th of April!
The other thing about my Official birthday is that I will be 46 years old.......OK? Got that? 46! Always! I am going to tell all my family that I shall expect all the normal birthday trappings....... cards, presents etc! Not to mention being taken out for dinner and flowers etc from Simon!
I reckon this is the best idea that I have had in ages and I think all of us girls should choose an Official birthday for ourselves. Let me know which date you have chosen for yours. After all if it's good enough for the Queen....... What's good for the goose is good for the gander as the expression goes. I wonder where on earth that one came from? I'll have to look that up as well now!
