About a month ago we noticed a pair of Back Birds flying in and out of the hedge at the front of our house. We took a peek and could see a beautiful, perfectly round nest. It wasn't long before Mum and Dad were flying backwards and forwards, constantly all day long. We could hear the impatient hungry cheeping of the babies waiting for their meal
I got quite excited about them and started to put out food on the front lawn. I even purchased "Fat balls", which I hung on the front hedge. The Black Birds weren't much interested in them but in the late afternoon the hedge is a “quiver” with Sparrows, Blue Tits, Coal Tits and Great Tits.
Just before the weekend, when Simon came home from school he saw a cat lying on top of our bin, with its top half buried in the hedge. The parent birds were nearby and going crazy. Simon shooed the cat away and moved the bin. We hoped for the best. We didn't dare check for fear of disturbing the nest.
We were busy over the weekend, so it took several days to realise that actually the birds are no longer there. The parents have gone and the nest is empty. I am so sad that I never got to see the first flights. I remember now why I have never liked cats!
OK, I know, I haven’t perfected the Haiku art yet!!
Take a look at my friend Connie’s Blog. She has done a lovely entry on the birds that she and her husband John T are watching in Arkansas. They have more exotic varieties than we do.

This is another one of my attempts at a Haiku.
