How many do you remember?

A while back, before Christmas my friend Miss Vicki sent this to me in a message. I thought it was interesting, so I kept it until I had time to blog it. It is a list of things from the "olden days" and you have to say what you can remember from your childhood. I have put my comments in blue.
Candy cigarettes. Yes, I loved these. Wax coke-shaped bottles with coloured sugar water inside. ???? I think these may have been a American thing.Soda pop machines that dispensed glass bottles. See above! Hoola hoop contests. I never had a hoola hoop. Buying milk from a vending machine for a quarter, with your penny change taped to the side. I don't think milk has ever been sold in vending machines over here. Coffee shops with table side juke boxes. Another American thing.
Blackjack, Clove and Teaberry chewing gum. I have never heard of any of these so I assume that they are American! I don't like chewing gum but I think Wrigley's was about the only brand available when I was young. Home milk delivery in glass bottles, with cardboard stoppers. YES!!!! Our milk was always delivered to the doorstep in glass bottles but I don't ever remember them having cardboard tops. They always had silver foil. In the summer, if you didn't bring it in quickly enough the blue tits would peck through the top to get to the cream. Party lines. I assume that this refers to phone lines?? Some of my friend's had party lines, shared with their next door neighbours. It was fun listening in!!! We didn't get a phone in our house until I was 18!! There is a really good story about how Simon had to phone the phone box on the corner of our street to ask me out on our first date!!!Newsreels before the movie. Don't remember this but I think that it did happen here years ago. My Dad says that they used to play "God save the Queen" when he was a kid and everyone had to stand. P. F. Flyers. HMMMMM, another American thing? I don't even know what these are! Butch wax. As above. Telephone numbers with a word prefix .... (Drexel-5505). Nope! Peashooters. I have heard of them, but never had one.
Howdy Doody. ???? American??? 45 RPM Records. Yes!!! Big CD's Saskia used to call them! I had quite a collection of these in my teens and still have most of them now, even though they are never played. Green Stamps. These were called Green Shield stamps over here and I remember my Mum collecting them. Hi-fi's. Are these an "olden day" thing? We still have one and it will play 45 RPM records!! Metal ice cube trays with levers. No. Ice cube trays have always been plastic haven't they?? Mimeograph paper. Never heard of it! Blue flash bulbs. As above. Beanie and Cecil. As above. Roller skate keys. I think I know what this means. We used to have roller skates that were joined together with a piece of metal to adjust the size. They fitted over your shoes. They were adjusted for size by unscrewing a big nut and bolt thing in the middle. I think that's what is referred to here. Cork pop guns. Nope! Drive ins. We never had these in the "olden days", but we have them now and drive throughs!!! Studebakers. ?????? American?? Wash Tub wringers. My Mum had an old fashioned wash tub with a manual wringer on the top when I was very young. The Fuller Brush man. American? Reel-to-reel tape recorders. Yes! We had one of these when I was young. I can remember being allowed to use it too. Phonographs. Is this a Hi-fi? The "twist", "mashed potatoes", and "funky-chicken" I know how to do the twist because people still do it now, but I don't know about the others. I think I have heard of mashed potato but it is before my time!Tinkertoys. Nope. The Erector Set. What????? My mind is boggling as to what this may have been! The Fort Apache Playset. Nope. Lincoln Logs. As above.
15 cent McDonald hamburgers & 10 cent fries. McDonald's didn't really arrive over here until I was grown up. My first real McDonald's experience was when Simon and I visited America for the first time in 1979. We travelled all the way across, from the east coast to the west. Much of it was done on Grey Hound buses, remember them? We often ate at McDonald's. I remember that they used to do great apple pies which they do over here now too. It was a cheap meal, but I can't remember exactly how much. I think it was $1. That reminds me, when we went to America that first time, it was during the oil crisis. When we left home petrol had just turned £1 per gallon. You Americans were incensed that it had just turned $1 a gallon and your gallons are bigger than ours, so we thought that was quite funny!5 cent packs of baseball cards..... with that slab of pink bubblegum. Another American thing, that I don't know. penny candy. See Above. 35 cent-a-gallon gasoline. See McDonald's entry. When the first man walked on the moon. I don't recall hearing about this at the time.
When Elvis Presley first appeared on the Ed Sullivan show. I only know Elvis retrospectively, he was before my time. My heroes were the Osmond's, in particular Donny!!!!! When the Beatles arrived. Same as above. When the Barbie doll hit the scene. I never had a real Barbie or Sindy, just a cheap market imitation. I remember when we got them for Christmas. My sister got a blonde one and I got a brunette. I wanted hers!!! I don't really remember why. It just seemed better.
If you can remember most or all of these, then you have lived!!! I received this list from my friend, Miss Vicki, and am passing it on. Some of you may be to young to remember these things........if so, just laugh and enjoy.
I enjoyed doing this and it has reminded me of all sorts of things that I had forgotten about. Tomorrow I will do a blog listing some of the things that I have remembered that aren't on this list. Now I think it is time for bed as it is 1am and I am tired!!!
