Wednesday 5th January

So where do I start?  Do you remember my blog post on Monday where I was looking forward to a nice long hot bath?  It didn’t happen.  Later on Monday afternoon I realised how cold I was and when I checked the radiator it was cold even though it was on full.  Hmm.......So were all the others. When I came to think about it the boiler was making a lot of noise.  I went to have a look at it and there was zero pressure.  Because it was making so much noise and I didn’t really know what to do I switched it off and left it for Simon to sort out when he got in.
He had several goes but it wouldn’t restart. The icon depicting flame failure was lit.  We checked the instructions and they said call your installer!  So no bath!  In fact an early night was in order because the house was freezing.
Simon went back to school yesterday leaving me to ring the plumber.  We have used the same one for various jobs over the last 10 years or so and in fact he was the one who fitted the boiler 4 and a half years ago.  Well not him personally his son and another chap did most of the work.  We had a new bathroom fitted at the same time and had about 5 of them all working here.
I’ve strayed from the point!  Anyway I got hold of Kenny and he said he would be with me in less than an hour.  I was pleased about that as it was freezing!  Remember how much I hate the cold. He was actually here much sooner than that.  He was here all day!  He had the entire thing in bits.  Even had to phone the manufactures technical department!
There was also a problem with the electrics, something to do with reverse polarity.  He did try to explain to me!  It means the live and neutral are reversed or something?  I don’t know!  He couldn’t figure out how that could have happened and started asking me if we had any electrical work done recently?  We haven’t.  He did explain why that might be relevant but...... I forget now!
It was a hell of a saga.  He fitted a new pump but it still didn’t work (he eventually took that off and put the old one back!) I had heating back again by about 3pm but still no hot water.  He got that going by about 4pm but then had to leave to go on another call out.  It wasn’t totally fixed as it was running at a pressure of 3-3.5 barr and that is way too high.  Don’t ask me what a barr is.  I did ask if it was safe and he said it was as it has built in safety features.  I was just grateful for the warmth.
He returned first thing this morning and spent another few hours here and it is now ok.  Hopefully!  I say that because Simon and I were just sitting commenting on how it keeps making lots of gurgling noises.  So we are now nice and warm again and I can go and have a bath.  We are also extremely poor now!  It cost £495!!!!!
I think I already mentioned that this boiler is less than 5 years old. This is the second time we have had to have it repaired.  The old boiler was over 20 years old and we never had any bother with it at all.  This one is a condenser boiler which we had to have as the old ones like we used to have are banned now. They aren’t environmentally friendly apparently. Well let me tell you the new kind aren’t financially friendly. Kenny said that the latest ones seem to have lots of problems and it is not unusual for him to be called out 2 or 3 times a year!  Thank goodness I haven’t got one of those.
After Kenny left it was time for my bike ride which I missed yesterday owing to Kenny being here.  I had agreed to cycle to Coralie’s so that she could come too. We are trying to cycle a little each day.  I’m still not telling you why!
We cycled a 1mile route to the south of her house mostly in the rain. We went to Sainsbury’s on the way back and then I went back to hers for lunch. Simon estimates that I did at least 2 and a half miles in total. Considering that only a few days ago I had to get off twice when riding 1 mile that’s quite good.  Weather permitting tomorrow I am going to do 3 circuits of the 1 mile route around the park.
The rest of the afternoon I spent doing some tidying up and Stumbling around!  More of that shortly.  Josh and Charlotte left about 3pm to go back to their own place in Bedford.  Uni resumes on Monday. I cooked sticky lemon chicken and rice for dinner which was really nice.
I have one more blog to do and then I am going to have a nice bath. I’ll be back tomorrow with 2 photo themes.
