26th January – My day.
Well here goes, my blow by blow account of 26th of January 2009. Simon woke me as usual at 7.30am with a cup of coffee and scrambled egg on toast. I was going to take a photo but I had such a bad night with so little sleep that I just couldn’t be bothered. I could hardly focus my eyes. In fact I ate my breakfast and then dozed until 9am. Lazy lazy!!!
Once I got up, as per my normal routine, the first thing I did was to switch on my computer which is right here in my bedroom next to my bed!
I don’t use it right away but I like to get it switched on ready! You can see my blog on screen! From there it was make my bleary eyed way to the bathroom where I got washed, dressed etc...
There is my shower and my bathroom sink. You can sort of see me in the mirror! That last photo is of my mineral deodorant stone. I have used a deodorant stone for over a year and they are great. I got my first one at a craft show at Sandringham. They are made of minerals and you just moisten it and then wipe it under your arms. Providing you don’t drop it, they last about a year. I think they work well. Nobody has told me I smell yet!
What next? Time to read a chapter of that new book. The Tightwad Gazette. Lots of good ideas in there. Oh, I did do a quickie bathroom clean and tidy too!
I didn’t make my bed though as the dogs were barking so I needed to get myself downstairs before they thought they had been abandoned!
I took a couple of photos from my bedroom window first though! This is the park that my house backs on to.
When I got downstairs to the kitchen this is what greeted me, so it was time to get stuck in and unload the dish washer then reload it with the breakfast stuff and clean and tidy the kitchen. This took a while as the cooker was very messy from yesterdays roast dinner.
Whilst busy in the kitchen I kept an eye on my bird feeders and tried to capture some photos of the blue tits. They aren’t very good as I have to take them through the glass. If I open the door the dogs go tearing out and the birds fly away. I am desperate to see signs of them using the bird boxes that Sam made but it’s a bit early yet for nest building.
While I am busy in the kitchen Loulou and Alfie watch from their box and basket.
Once the kitchen was tidy it was time to bake a cake as we had run out. I decided to do a cherry and almond cake which is a cake version of a bakewell tart!
Ok, first get out two 20cm tins, then grease them and then get the scales for weighing ingredients!
Out come all the ingredients, weigh out the sugar and butter and then add the eggs.
Get out the trusty Kenwood Chef, set it to run and hey presto cake mixture!! All my activity is watched by the doggies from their box! Well except Rosie who is asleep upstairs on the settee!
They woke up when the timer went off on the oven! While the cakes were cooking I sorted out my container of compost stuff and added my empty egg box to the ones I have already collected. They are for chitting the potatoes once we get them.
The third photo shows a seed tray made from toilet roll tubes cut in half! Apparently this is great for seedlings as you just plant them out inside their toilet roll and it decomposes into the ground. This way you don’t disturb their delicate little roots! So we have read!
Ok, I’m still waiting for the post to come so I look round and I see my poinsettia plant that I got a few weeks before Christmas and as I haven’t killed it I thought I would show you.
Then the postman came but he only brought 3 things. 2 were junk mail and the other was a small parcel for Simon which turned out to be some rock and roll Cd,s. No long white envelopes with competition wins today!!
As I was still waiting for my cake to be ready and I didn’t want to go and get busy elsewhere I thought I would show you my onions which arrived on Friday and are now waiting for the right time to be planted. The ones in the middle are the shallots and the ones on the right are the Sturon onions.
Loulou took advantage of my being in Joshua’s room which is where the onions currently are and hopped up on to Josh’s bed for a nap!
Still waiting for the cake so let’s take a few more photos just to keep you all amused!!
3 lots of allotment wellies!!
Saskias new wellies. My dirty cooker! A stone with a hole in it that I found when we were in Dorset in October. It lives in my coat pocket but is currently on the kitchen window sill as my coat is in the wash! I actually cleaned the cooker whilst waiting for the cake and taking photos! I did honest!
At last.....the cake was ready..........
Thank goodness now I can go and have my morning coffee! Plus a little snack, a piece of flapjack made a few days ago.
Loulou waits patiently to see if any flap jack is coming her way!
With the cake safely cooling down on the rack, on top of the fridge away from doggies reach, I took my coffee and flap jack upstairs for a bit of catch up blogging. I also entered some competitions and checked my email. My faithful boy slept on the (unmade) bed next to me.
Typically no sooner had I settled myself down and got engrossed with some computer stuff than the front doorbell rang. I knew that it would be the man from Tesco with my shopping. It always happens, as soon as I sit down he arrives!
Even though there wasn’t too much shopping it takes ages to put it away as I always clean out my cupboards and fridge first. Whilst cleaning out the fridge I found some bits that had been over looked and had to go for composting! I had to start a carrier bag as my little tub was full. I need to go to the allotment to empty them.
By the time I had the shopping organised my cake was cool so I decided to give up on coffee time and progress with the cake.
By now it was heading towards lunch time so I decided to get some bread going in the bread maker so we could have it with soup for dinner.
My doggies were watching my every move. They like me cooking.
This morning while I was clearing the kitchen I was very annoyed by a pile of cookery magazines that have taken up residence on the end of my kitchen table, so using my “thrifty” hat I set about making a holder for them out of an old cereal box. All I need to do now is cover it with some paper or material. A job for tomorrow, I’ll show you when it’s finished.

Okay so the next job was to put out the rubbish and the recycling, first going right out to the road to bring back the green bin which had been emptied today.
Here are our 3 bins. The brown one is for garden waste, the green one for recycling and the black one is for other domestic waste. They get emptied on alternate weeks, which we find works quite well. The middle photo shows and example of what goes into the recycling. Note the wine bottle!!! There is my indoor bin all nice an clean waiting to go back.
This morning whilst reading my blogs my cousin Wendy had suggested taking a look at The Fly Lady’s blog. I mentioned it in my previous blog. The Fly Lady says that to be organised you must always shine your kitchen sink, so...........
I always do as I am told! Yeah right!
Look at Alfie in his basket watching me!
By this time it was well gone lunch time so I decided that it was time for a cup of coffee and a bit of a rest. Let’s have our coffee in a pretty mug this time!
Guess what happened? I had no sooner taken it upstairs and sat at my computer when the dogs started barking and there was a ring on the door bell! I went downstairs to find nobody at the door but through the glass I could see a large, looming, black shape. I opened the door to find no one there but my composter bin had been left there with its little work top caddy inside! Remember that I ordered this some weeks back. I had a job getting it into the house! We need to decide where it is to go now as it has to be placed on soil or grass and we only have paving and artificial grass!
I was pleased that they had finally come and once I had it in the house I went back upstairs for some computer time and my coffee. Guess what happened next? I had just sat down when I could hear someone coming in........it turned out that it was Coralie and Evan. That was the end of my coffee time and play time with Evan began!
Evan soon got tired and we put him in the travel cot for a nap. He was a bit upset today, we weren’t too sure why, might be more teeth coming through. Coralie and I went downstairs so that I could get my bread out of the bread maker and make some soup for dinner. Monday’s dinner is always something really simple as Simon doesn’t come in until late. I made spicy carrot and red lentil soup which is really nice and very filling.
Coralie took Evan home about 6.30pm and Saskia came in a few minutes after they left. I had a quick potter around the house for a bit of a tidy up. I didn’t get around to hovering today or doing my Wii Fit. I was too tired in the evening.
Oh dear! My bed still isn’t made, my living room is messy and my Wii Fit is standing idle!
One of the things that I hate about Mondays is that from half past five onwards the dogs all start getting really silly and whiney. They know that their Dad should be in soon and when he doesn’t come they get worse and worse. They don’t seem to have worked out yet that on Mondays he is late!
I left them all moping and being silly downstairs in the kitchen and took a cup of coffee upstairs so that I could post the blog that I had been working on all day and have a bit of a rest before Eastenders. Simon came in at just gone 9pm bearing a gift.......
Red wine! See he does get some things right! Mind you I had phoned him earlier and told him I thought I needed a bottle! We sat down straight away to have our soup and bread followed by a slice of cake. Maybe not the most nutritious dinner but easy and quick. Simon fed the dogs who were all obviously starving.
Since then I have just been lounging around reading a bit of my book and entering some more competitions. Simon was quite tired and I wanted to get this done tonight if possible so he has gone to sleep in Verity’s room. Before he went he took a photo of me sitting here on my computer.
Don’t I look good! Not! I look absolutely knac*****, I mean tired! Maybe it’s that glass of wine? On second thoughts I think that is what is keeping me going! Can you see this blog post on my screen?
Well it is now actually twenty minutes into the 27th of January so I didn’t get it posted for the 26th, but not far off. I am going to spell check it and then get it on to my blog. After I have saved it to Word of course! Then I am going to read a bit more of my book a I know I won’t sleep yet.
If you stayed with me and read to the end of this posting, I hope you enjoyed it. I will do it again next month but possibly with fewer photos! Some of you said you were going to join in too so it will be interesting tomorrow to see what we all got up to on the 26th of January 2009.
