As you know I enter lots of competitions both postal and online. I belong to a competition web site which gathers up the details of thousands of online competitions. This means my attention is often drawn to competitions that I would not ordinarily know about.
One such the other day was a competition from the Guardian newspaper to win tickets to a private viewing at the Tate Gallery of the 4 short listed Turner Prize candidates. Not my cup of tea at all. I didn’t enter. However out of curiosity I thought I would have a look to see what apparently constitutes art this year.
The 4 are: Dexter Dalwood, Angela de la Cruz, Susan Philipsz and the Otolith Group.
I had a quick look at each of them and as I knew I would be I am totally bemused. The Otolith group have this photo on their page:
Looks out of focus to me and they have chopped her head in half!
Susan Philipsz, well I can’t even work out what the heck she does the page says the following: Philipsz uses her own voice to create uniquely evocative sound installations that play upon and extend the poetics of specific, often out-of-the-way spaces.
Dexter Dalwood does at least seem to paint and there is an example on his page entitled: The death of David Kelly 2008.
It looks like a very simple painting to me.
Then the best of all, I have saved it for last! Angela de la Cruz. She seems to do piles of junk. This one is called Super clutter XXL. As far as I can gather she does a new junk pile each year.
Well what do you think? Am I just an uncomprehending idiot or do these people take us all for a ride? What does art mean to you? Do you even care? If I pile up all the junk that is currently on my bedroom floor and arrange it artistically do you think I have a chance of winning next year? How do I enter anyway? Forget winning tickets for a viewing, I want to enter the actual Turner Prize. I’m telling you I can make a clutter heap to rival anyone’s.
Jilly
