June 1st 2008! Nearly half way through the year already! It's a bit of a grotty overcast day here in Peterborough. It isn't cold, just grey with some drizzly rain. I don't think I am going to be sitting in my garden today.
I am really pleased with the garden the astro turf looks brilliant. The plants are coming on and the birds have been backwards and forwards to the new "feeding station". Ellie also seemed to like the grass. Sam came over with her yesterday afternoon and we got some toys out and played on the grass. She was so cute, toddling all round. We had to keep Alfie and Loulou indoors though as they still haven't got used to Ellie.
Ellie wasn't too keen on Grandad drilling holes in the wall either. I think the noise scared her. Simon was putting up more brackets for hanging baskets. I like hanging baskets, they look so pretty and the dogs can't ruin them! Ellie can't pick the flowers either! She picked several from my tubs yesterday! Sam said he often picks flowers in their garden to give to her!
I sat out in the garden last night after everyone had gone. It was lovely, still warm and I had my book and a glass of wine. The first bird to be brave enough to come and see this new feeding thing was, a robin. It went for the fat balls.
While I sat there I had a whole succession of birds. At one point there were 2 robins, a great tit and a baby starling who had a lovely wash in the bird bath! It was so cute to see him fluffing up his feathers.
Simon and Saskia apparently really enjoyed the Bruce Springsteen concert last night. They said it was a really good atmosphere. It is a really big venue though and listening to them talking, I know I wouldn't have been happy amongst all those people.
Simon has gone to a car show today at Billing Aqua Drome which is a bout an hour away. He will be home about 6pm. Saskia was here for a while this morning, but she has gone home now. Josh has just popped to Sainsburys for me to get a few essential groceries. I sat in the kitchen for a while with Saskia and we watched the birds going to the feeders. Also chased the squirrels away several times. They haven't yet come near the feeding station, but I do still have a suet thing hanging in the trees and they keep trying their luck at getting that!
We have had a lot of different birds this morning: doves, sparrows, robins, starlings, black birds, blue tits, great tits, coal tits and a chaffinch. I have also seen 3 that I don't recognise. I am going to look them up to find out what they are. One was quite tiny and seemed to be a yellowy green colour, another was very small and was black and white, the third was also black and white but different to the other one!
I'll let you know when I discover what they are. I will also try and take some photos later. I had been hoping to have a fairly relaxing day today. Just a bit of tidying up and some ironing. It is not working out that way........ I went into the living room this morning and as soon as I did, I saw this kind of silvery trail on the carpet. As I looked further I realised that it was every where! It looked just like the silvery trail that a slug would leave! I called Saskia and Josh to look and they agreed it looked like a slug trail. Yuk.
How on earth could a slug get into my living room? It's on the second floor? Anyway, we investigated and the trail went everywhere. All around the edge of the room and backwards and forwards across the middle. There was nothing for it but to move all the furniture to try and find it and then clear up. We eventually found it under a large pouffe. It was very large and seemed to be dead. It made me feel sick. Josh removed it for me.
Since then I have been cleaning. It is taking ages as we had moved all the furniture. It's just disgusting and makes me feel horrid. How on earth could it get 2 floors up? It doesn't seem to have been anywhere else. Josh thinks that it came in through the window which has been open the last few days, but actually wasn't last night. There is some slime on the wall near there.
To do that though, it would have had to have crawled up the outside wall from the decking below. I have never seen slugs going up the walls, although I suppose they can. I did have a look outside, but there are no tell tale silvery tracks on the wall or the decking.
It's a mystery. A disgusting mystery! I hate slugs at the best of times. Last year they ate all my marigolds over night the same day we planted them. This year all my plants have slug pellets round them, and I have been checking for slugs everyday. They are horrible disgusting things! What is the point of them anyway?
So, my restful day of not doing too much has turned into a mammoth cleaning session that I could really do without. I am trying to take it easy, doing a little bit then having a little rest. With luck I may get it finished by the time Simon gets home.
Going to make some coffee now and sit and watch the birds.
