Entry for 25 May 2007 (copy)

I am having a great start to the day, I have just knocked half a cup of coffee into my key board! I really don't know how my poor old key board is surviving. This is about the fifth time in recent weeks that it has suffered liquid damage! I would be worried about my clumsiness except it only happens at my computer and it is because my desk is tiny and doesn't really have enough room for cups of coffee or glasses of wine!
I have cleaned the bathroom and got some washing on, so at least I am getting on there. I still have to iron, hoover and tidy the kitchen before going to school this afternoon.
Yesterday was a busy day. In the morning I had to make several phone calls regarding a meeting about my Mum. They took ages to get hold of the right person. I was in school in the afternoon to invigilate 60 students taking a media exam. A couple of people have asked me what an invigilator actually is. Well according to Dictionary.com it is: a noun meaning someone who watches examination candidates to prevent cheating.
That is basically it in a nut shell but as senior invigilator my job involves lots more. The examination entries are made by the exams officer. The rest of the administration of the exams is carried out by the senior invigilator. This means setting up the exam venue, ensuring the security of the papers, beginning and ending the exams, dealing with anything that arises during the exam and then completing all necessary paper work and reports and finally the dispatch of the papers to the relevant exam board. We have to ensure that the rules and regulations of the examination boards and Joint Council are carried out.
We are not there just to look out for cheating. We have many cases of disruptive pupils and we have to deal with them, which often means having then removed form the venue. The Joint Council rules state that we are there to ensure that every candidate has a fair and equal chance. We are in radio contact with the exams officer in case we have any disruption and need to have someone taken out. It's an OK job for me, because as I explained yesterday, most of the time I don't work!
Most months there are only sporadic days when I am required. Often for statuary tests carried out with lower school pupils. The busy time is from the beginning of May until the end of June when I am there pretty much every day. June is the busiest time and I will be in school every single day more or less full time. I don't really like that as I get behind with my jobs at home, but it does pay for extra holidays.
Anyway, today is the last day as it is the half term holiday next week. Hopefully we may be able to get the garden patio finished and I can get started on some plants. I have some sunflowers that I want to plant out soon. I grew them from seed. I have never grown a sun flower before and it was on my list of "must do's"! I got a little kit form Tesco which consisted of three tiny little parcels of compost that sit on a plastic frame over a tiny bowl. You fill the bowl with water and just lay the seeds on top of the compost.
They were supposed to take about 5-8 days to germinate. Mine took about three weeks. I have managed to get 4 plants. Unfortunately about a week a go, I transferred then into a bigger pot and put them in the garden. The following day, one had been eaten completely and a second one was half gone...........Slugs!!! Hopefully they will survive.
I reused the compost and little bowl to do the same thing with some seeds from a bell pepper. They grew quite quickly and I need to put them in a bigger pot now to see what happens with them. I don't know anything about pepper plants, don't even know if they grow in the UK but it will be interesting to see.
Right, time now I think to do a couple of jobs and then make myself a fresh cup of coffee.
