Entry for 29 July 2008

Fields of Lavender
It's a funny old summer so far. This last week in Peterborough we have had glorious sunshine and temperatures nearly in the eighties and then we have had chilly winds and torrential rain! Oh to live in Britain in the summer!
I did manage to sit in the garden for a while on Sunday afternoon and also again for a little while yesterday. I am getting a nice tan now. I know we aren't supposed to sit out in it, I know they say it's not good for us, but the opportunity doesn't come often in this country and I can't resist.
It is just so blissful to lay in the sun with a good book and a nice cool drink on hand. Plus, I swear I am thinner with a suntan!! Today has been warm but over cast, no good for sun bathing. Simon and I did sit outside to eat our lunch though, which was lovely. Simon cooked home made pancakes which he served with fresh strawberries, Cornish ice cream and added double cream! Not for dieters! I'm past caring!
Since then, it has started to drizzle with rain. I still have washing on the line, but I didn't realise in time and now it's wet again. I have decided to leave it as it doesn't look like it will be much.
I am feeling quite a bit better and more like myself this week. Simon is home now for a few weeks, so we can get some jobs done and spend some time together. We had a lazy day yesterday. In the afternoon we went to Tesco and got a new ironing board and then to the garden centre. I got a couple of new plants for an extra pot and some canes to prop up my tomato plants.
They have gone a bit wild. I think my mistake was, that one pot has 2 plants in and the other, slightly bigger, pot has 3 plants. I think next year, I will just put one plant per pot. They are covered in tomatoes, but they are still very small and green. I'll have to wait and see how they turn out, but at least they have more support now.
We had a lovely quiet evening yesterday. I watched Eastenders then had a lovely long bath with a glass of wine and read my book. Today, we got up late and have mostly been just pottering. I have done some washing and ironing though. It is hard to work my normal system with Simon around!
He has gone to his barn now, to do a few little jobs and to bring home his dirty washing from his trip away to the car show. The washing got left in his car! One of the jobs is to mend my new bird feeder! I purchased 3 new feeders from EBay last week. One has a sort of cage round it, which allows small birds through but not squirrels. I have fat balls in there. The other 2 are quite large, made of metal and have a sort of spring loaded mechanism, which in theory means, when the squirrels land on it, their weight will bring down a protective shield over the food.
I have seed in one and peanuts in the other.... or at least I did! I purchased these from a Company called Guardman and they are guaranteed squirrel proof. They obviously haven't come across my squirrels! First of all the mechanism only works if the squirrel jump on from above. If they just shimmy up the pole and leap on from the bottom it doesn't work! Secondly, if the squirrel some how manages to get the metal bottom off, then the peanuts just fall straight out on to the ground!
Blasted squirrels, I hate them. The little mouse that we keep seeing in the garden had a brilliant time yesterday, collecting up peanuts and taking them under the shed! We reckon it must be living under there as that was where it was going with the food. It's either building a store, or it's got a wife and family under there! We have only seen the one mouse though. At least we assume it's the same one!
Anyway, Simon has taken the peanut feeder and is going to weld the bottom, back on, so I'll try again. Tonight there will be just the 2 of us, as Josh left at lunch time for a 2 week "boys" holiday in Crete. This is the third year running that he has been on a boys holiday, so I'm not too worried about him. More envious, than anything else!
It will be nice to have the house totally to ourselves. We'll have to try out some swinging from the chandeliers or something, like we promised ourselves, before our 5 children came along!! LOL!! Actually on reflection, that's not a great idea as all the other children who aren't away on holiday, still have door keys! We should have taken them away! Actually, we don't have any chandeliers either....damn!
We have a busy week coming up anyway. Tomorrow we are having Ellie all day as Lisa has a days work. On Thursday, I shall be going up to Stevenage to visit my Mum in the hospital as it is her birthday. On Friday it is Coralie's birthday and we are going to have a family picnic (weather permitting). Then on Saturday we are going to meet up with Wendy and Nick at the Cambridge folk festival.
Oh goodness, I just looked out of the window and it is really pouring with rain now, so I shall have to go and retrieve my washing! looks like it's back to the trusty tumble drier!
